（1）less是little 的比較級。
（2）to live on不定式短語，在此句中作land 的定語，意為“可居住的”。起形容詞的作用，在英語中，動詞不定式作后置定語，修飾前面的名詞或代詞時，他們之間構(gòu)成邏輯上的動賓關(guān)系，若動詞為不及物動詞，要在其后加相應的介詞。
（e.g） Do you have something to read?你有可讀的（刊物）嗎？

I need a pen to write with.我要一支筆寫。（write with與pen形成邏輯上的動賓關(guān)系,with不可省。

Those代替的是前面提到的plants,以避免重復。若代替的是單數(shù)可數(shù)名詞或不可數(shù)名詞，則用that .
